House of God
In Yemen, mosques are vibrant places full of life and worship. As you see here, many gather to read the Qur’an, reflect, and remember God. This beautiful mosque, full of elderly gentlemen, had an ancient feel to it, yet felt electrically alive. The spirit of this mosque was strong — as many mosques in Yemen still are.

                                                Man of God
I can easily say one of the most amazing experiences I had was first meeting this man, Shaykh Abdullah Husayn Al-Jo’di. Despite his age and small frame, he had an awe-inspiring presence and his face emanated light.
It is with a heavy heart that I post this picture because I just received news today that he passed away last month in Ta’iz, Yemen. To God we belong, and to Him we return. Please pray for him.
Al-Fatiha.

One of my favorite songs about loving the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. Muslims for generations have expressed their love through poetry and song. This group singing is from Southern Yemen. Enjoy!

From Tarim to Granada "There is No Conqueror Except God"

This is the story of new communities and ancient legacies. Of enduring faith and the burden of history. Of renewing the connection between East and West. Of finding a new convivencia for our times.

Capturing Light Photography

Seeing the world through the lens of the camera makes you search for the light. Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan to parents who immigrated from Libya, Amjad Tarsin has always been thrust between the different shades of life. Moving from Ann Arbor off to Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen, Amjad’s journeys have exposed him to a diverse array of people speaking in different tongues, holding different beliefs, and celebrating the variation in their cultural expressions. Ever since Amjad’s father gave him his first camera at sixteen years old, he’s been drawn to bringing the diversity and beauty of human nature to light.
