Hadith of the Week: Beautiful Compensation

On the authority of Anas, may Allah be pleased with him:

“Abu Talha, may Allah be pleased with him, had a son who was ill. While Abu Talha was traveling, the boy passed away. When Abu Talha returned he asked [his wife], ‘What has happened to my son?’ Umm Sulaym replied (she was the boy’s mother), ‘He is as peaceful as he has ever been.’ She then presented dinner to him and he ate, then he approached her. When they were done, she told him that the boy had passed. 

The next morning when Abu Talha awoke he went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and told him what his wife had done. The Messenger then asked, ‘Did you celebrate last night?’ [i.e. did you embrace in love] and Abu Talha said yes. The [Prophet] then said, ‘O Allah bless them both!’ and his wife [became pregnant] and gave birth to a boy. So Abu Talha said, ‘Take him [the boy] until you reach the Prophet peace be upon him’ and he sent along some dates. 

[When reaching the Prophet, he asked,] ‘Did he send anything [along with the baby]?’ 

‘Yes, some dates.’

So the Prophet took it [i.e. the date] and chewed it, then the the Prophet took it out of his mouth and placed it in the mouth of the newborn and massaged his gums with the dates, then he named him ‘Abdullah.’”

One of the Ansar later narrated that Abdullah grew and fathered nine sons, all of whom memorized the Qur’an.
