Now and Then

mikasavela:

The Ahmed Pasha Karamanli Mosque in Tripoli, Libya between 1860-190 (from Library of Congress collections).

And in 2010 (by David Stanley).

This is my preferred mosque where I would pray Tarawih most nights! A beautiful and illuminated house of God.

Bad Knees
“Reach out to Allah, even if weak and broken.”
[I dedicate this photo to the elderly man I would see sitting on the pillar at the Mawlids at Masjid As-Surur in Tarim who always stands in love of God and His Messenger]

Jami’ ad-Da’wah al-Islamiyyah
This mosque, one of the biggest in Tripoli, was only a few blocks away from my grandfather’s house. During Ramadan the mosque was so full that it was sometimes hard to find a place to pray.

House of God
In Yemen, mosques are vibrant places full of life and worship. As you see here, many gather to read the Qur’an, reflect, and remember God. This beautiful mosque, full of elderly gentlemen, had an ancient feel to it, yet felt electrically alive. The spirit of this mosque was strong — as many mosques in Yemen still are.

These are some photos I took at the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, MI. I love the very elaborate and traditional design and how there is just the right touch of modern style as well. It’s a beautiful mosque that really helps tell the unfolding narrative of Islam in America.

The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said, “God is beautiful and loves beauty.”

Shaykh ‘Abdus-Salam al-Asmar’s Mosque
In the city of Zleetin, Libya (about two hours drive from Tripoli). These are some beautiful tiles found on the walls surrounding the grave of Libya’s most well-known sage and spiritual master, Shaykh ‘Abdus-Salam al-Asmar (or al-Fayturi). Nearby is the mosque and Qur’an school established by the Shaykh.

Ahmad Pasha Mosque
These are some tiles at the Ahmad Pasha Mosque, which was one of my favorite mosques in all of Tripoli. It is an older mosque built by a Turkish pasha. The mosque is found at the entrance of the Old City.
The designs all around the mosque are beautiful, and praying there at night was very enjoyable (I particularly miss the melodic recitation of the Qur’an and the dhikr at the end of each prayer!).

Jāmaʿ al-Nāqah — “The Mosque of the Camel”

One of the oldest mosques in Tripoli, found in the Old City. This beautiful mosque is always full during Friday Prayers. Many righteous sages and scholars have prayed here before. And many still do.
