NOBILITY

The Sharīf Mowlāy Ḥasan of Morocco. He was a student of the great scholar and sage, Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Al-Ḥabīb (may Allah be well pleased with him). He is one of the most luminous, kind, gentle, loving, and awe-inspiring human beings I have had the honor of meeting. May Allah preserve and bless him.

"Love and Respect" is an intimate dialogue with Bay Area Imam, Yassir Chadly, about the role of culture in Islam. He speaks about the importance of an Imam or religious leader having a firm grasp of the local customs of a place before giving any Fatwas or religious edicts. He explains how love and respect are pillars of the faith and that if left, "the whole house will fall and Islam will fail."

Shaykh Abdul Basit sending peace and blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad. Wish this happened more often in mosques. Beautiful!

Shaykh Nuh Keller’s book “Sea Without Shore” which I am currently reading (and thoroughly enjoying).

A beautiful quote from the book attributed to Abu Sulayman al-Darani, “When souls make up their mind to abandon all sins, they roam freely in the spiritual world and return to their owners with exquisite pieces of wisdom without any scholar having imparted knowledge to them.”

"Believers, respond to God and His Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. Know that God comes between a person and their heart, and that you will be gathered to Him." (Qur’an 8:24).

Prayer of Light

O God! You are light, and from You is light. Place light in my heart and on my tongue and in my eyes and in my ears and in front of me and to the right of me and to the left of me and behind me and in my presence. Place light in my nerves and in my bones and in my flesh. Make me live in light; grant me light; give me light; make me light.

—the Prophet Muhammad, peace and mercy of God be upon him.

Shaykh Abdul Basit, may God have mercy on him, beautifully reciting the chapter from the Qur’an titled “The Morning Brightness” (Ad-Duha). His recitation is so heartfelt, I encourage just listening to it for a few minutes. The immensity of the Arabic is impossible to convey, but the translation is below:

By the morning brightness and the night when it grows still, your Lord has not forsaken you [Prophet], nor does He hate you, and the future will be better for you than the past; your Lord is sure to give you [so much] that you will be well pleased. Did He not find you an orphan and shelter you, find you lost and guide you, find you in need and satisfy your need?

So do not be harsh with the orphan and do not chide the one who asks for help; talk about the blessings of your Lord.

These are some photos I took at the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, MI. I love the very elaborate and traditional design and how there is just the right touch of modern style as well. It’s a beautiful mosque that really helps tell the unfolding narrative of Islam in America.

The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said, “God is beautiful and loves beauty.”
