A Sufi
Once, as Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal was sitting with al-Shāfiʿī, Shayban al-Rāʿī came to them. Aḥmad said [to al-Shāfiʿī]: “Abu ʿAbdallah, I’d like to draw your attention to his lack of knowledge, so that he would busy himself with acquiring some of it.”
Al-Shāfiʿī exclaimed: “Don’t do this!”
However, Ibn Ḥanbal did not desist. He asked Shayban: “What can you say about someone who forgot [to perform] one of the five [canonical] daily prayers and cannot remember which of them he forgot? Shayban, what do you think he should do?”
Shayban replied: “Aḥmad, that is a heart that was neglectful of God Most High. Therefore, it must be educated [in good manners], so that it would never ever be neglectful of its Master.”
[On hearing this] Aḥmad [b. Ḥanbal] fainted. When he came to, al-Shāfiʿī—may God have mercy on him—said: “Didn’t I tell you to leave him alone?!”
